Barelang Bridge (short for BAtam, REmpang, and gaLANG) is the name of the bridge connecting the islands of Batam Island, Tonton Island, Nipah Island, Rempang Island, Galang Island and Galang Baru Island. The local people call it "Barelang Bridge", but others call it the "Habibie Bridge", because he initiated the construction of the bridge to facilitate the three islands that are designed to be developed into an industrial area in the Riau Archipelago. The three islands now include the Riau Islands Province.
Barelang Bridge has become an icon of Batam City, has even been popular as a landmark of Batam Island. If the City of Jakarta is identical with the Monas then people will identify the city of Batam with Barelang Bridge (Barelang Bridge).
The name of Barelang Bridge which is given by the local community is more popular than the original name of the Bridge Fisabilillah. The name "Barelang" by the community is taken from the names of islands connected by the bridge; Batam, Rempang, and Galang. Barelang Bridge has another name, Bridge Habibie or Bridge one.
Barelang Bridge is a high-tech pilot project involving hundreds of Indonesian engineers without interference from foreign experts. Built to expand the work area of the Batam Authority (OB) as the Batam Island industrial district regulator. Trans Barelang bridge builder has absorbed the budget of Batam Authority (OB) of Rp 400 Billion which was built in the period of six years (1992 - 1998). These six magnificent bridges are a vital project to connect the Trans Barelang line that stretches for 54 kilometers.
